What do you want?
What do… you want?
I love this question. When taken for granted, it’s so mundane… ‘whaddya want?’. But when you slow down and really think about your answer, everything can change.
What, specifically, do you want?
There are subtle differences when you emphasize a different part of this question.
‘What do you want?’ vs ‘What do you want?’
I want to talk about the ‘do’ variation —’What do you want’, and the shift away from thinking about what you don’t want.
What you don’t want is usually pretty clear. It comes with some negative emotion — pain, annoyance, anger, frustration, fatigue, boredom…. That emotion is just the starting point. However, it can be difficult to get equal clarity around what you do want.
Challenges aside, it was a revelation when I realized, the universe was asking requiring me to stop thinking about what I don’t want — which is sometimes reality, and other times is just a bad perspective — and to pause, make a blank slate if needed, and think about, what I do want.
Don’t make this hard, the first step is to just daydream. Mentally create what you want.
- The Universe
Some people call this goal setting. And say to write it down. I’m all for that, but what works better for me is to get absorbed in the feelings of a vivid daydream. The feeling is how I know if I’m on to something or not. If I’m still tight in my jaw or chest, we’re still in the realm of worrying about what I don’t want. Once there is at least peace, I know we’re getting there.
Daydreaming about what you want, while straight forward, may not be easy at first.
Your mind will give you a million reasons why you can’t have what you want. shush them all. it’s your mental world, you may as well imagine your best life.
But what is the best life?
Sometimes what I want is change, but other times it isn’t a new situation — what I want is just a new internal reaction. A new energy. Have you heard the expression that life is like a spiral staircase? We keep circling the same situations from a higher perspective. So, sometimes, that’s what I’m looking for, the higher vibe approach.
But either way, try shifting your mental energy to thinking about what you do want. It can take a while to get there but you’ll know when you’ve found it by how it makes you feel.
That’s it. Focus on what you do want.
